主题
David Hume’s Political Philosophy:
Justice, Property, Government and Opinion
The main text for these classes is Enquiries Concerning the Principles of Morals. You are advised to read it all in advance of the classes, but I will indicate below the sections that we shall discuss in each of the four classes. It is also very useful to read Book 3, Part II of A Treatise of Human Nature, (“Of Justice and Injustice), particularly for the classes on Property and on Opinion, but in general for the other classes too. For the classes on Government and Opinion, you should also read three of Hume’s political essays: “Of the first principles of government”; “Of the origin of government”; and “Of the original contract”. Recommended editions and secondary literature are listed at the end.

Prof. Dario Castiglione
Dario Castiglione teaches Political Theory at the University of Exeter, where he is the Director of the Centre for Political Thought. His research interests are both historical and theoretical. His historical work is about early modern political and philosophical thought, mainly Hume, Mandeville and the Scottish Enlightenment; and the Natural Law and contractualist traditions. His theoretical work is about democracy, citizenship and constitutionalism; civil society and sociability; and more recently about theories of political representation. He has been visiting professor in many international institutions in Germany, Italy, the United States, China and Australia; and directed several international research projects, particularly on the development of the European Union as a political system. He is currently involved in a European research project on representative democracy. He has written on Hume’s theory of justice and government, including a contribution on ‘The Origin of Civil Government’ to the Handbook of 18th-century British Philosophy (OUP, 2013). His other publications include volumes on: The History of Political Thought in National Context, (CUP, 2001), The Handbook of Social Capital (OUP, 2008), Institutional Diversity in Self-governing Societies (Lexington Books, 2017), Les Défis de la Representation (Garnier Classiques, 2018); Creating Political Presence: The New Politics of Democratic Representation (Chicago University Press, 2019), and with Richard Bellamy, From Maastricht to Brexit: Democracy, Constitutionalism and Citizenship in the EU (RLI-ECPR Press, 2019).

Readings
Classes will concentrate on Hume’s texts, so it is important that you read them. If you wish to have a broader understanding of the place of Hume’s political theory in his own context and also as general contribution to political though, you may also want to read some of the secondary literature.
Primary texts

The Ideology of the Total State: The Book of
Lord Shang (Shangjunshu 商君書)
and its intellectual context
The Book of Lord Shang (Shangjunshu 商君書) is a fascinating and hugely controversial text, which, for a variety of reasons had been all but neglected in Sinological research until very recently. Our meeting will focus on reading and discussing selected chapters of this text and placing its ideas in the broad context of intellectual developments of the Warring States period. In particular, I propose to explore the book’s evolutionary view of history, its concept of human nature, its economic and military thought, particularly the idea of a “total war,” and its peculiar view of meritocracy. Parallels and differences with such texts as Mozi, Sunzi, Xunzi, Han Feizi, and the like will be highlighted throughout.
